I’ve been researching the multiple benefits of using Far Infrared Saunas to rid our bodies of the toxins we are exposed to in our environment everyday. In an effort to understand our environment and how toxins affect us, I decided to look into the issues our environment presents. Toward this end, I turned to two interrelated fields of study which include environmental health and environmental medicine.
First, Environmental Health encompasses the study of physical, biological, and chemical components outside the human body. Environmental issues impacting our health today include air quality, water purity, food safety, drugs, hazardous materials, occupational safety, pesticides, and so forth. Environmental health experts study and work to reduce, prevent, and/or eliminate illness, diseases, and deaths humans experience as a result of our environment. For example, floods, tornados, wild fires, and other natural disasters can unearth new vulnerabilities for us in the environment which can present health concerns through exposure to various unhealthy agents. So environmental health works to understand and minimize the risks we as humans are exposed to in our environment. Many of these efforts are headed up by the Center for Disease Control.
On the second front, Environmental Medicine looks at illnesses born from environmental conditions. The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) reports there are significant increases in the number of individuals reporting and experiencing chronic illnesses. Unfortunately, many of the current traditional treatment methods for these chronic illnesses often only address symptom management and not root cause cures. In response to the increases in chronic illnesses, Physicians formed the AAEM in 1960 to study our body’s reactions to the environment.
The AAEM reports our reaction to the environment is individually based on “genetic predisposition, gender, nutritional status, level of exposures to offending substances, infectious processes, and emotional and physical stress”. Their Model for Environmental Medicine is based on both Eastern and Western traditions, which looks at our dynamic environment, adaptation/adjustment processes, and root causes for illness. This holistic perspective allows Physicians to provide comprehensive treatment services that heal core individual issues contributing to the body’s breakdown in functioning.
The AAEM labels chronic conditions with an environmental connection as Environmentally Triggered Illnesses, which can include: “system illnesses like obesity, cardiovascular disorders, eye/ear/nose/throat disorders, pulmonary disorders, endocrine dysfunction, gastrointestinal disorders, hematologic disorders, genitourinary disorders, neurological disorders, neurobehavioral and psychiatric disorders, rheumatologic disorders, musculoskeletal disorders, skin disorders, and cancer.” Their treatment approach is proactive and comprises a combination of approaches including: “education, custom diets, nutritional supplements, immunotherapies, psychotherapies, detoxification therapy, environmental controls, pharmaceuticals, and surgery.” This relatively new area of practice hold promises for those suffering from chronic illness. Our environment presents us with many challenges and with continued research and understanding we can prevent and heal many of the chronic health conditions affecting us today.
